Cagiva Elefant 900 I.E. Lucky Explorer
The Cagiva Elefant 900 I.E. Lucky Explorer is one of the most iconic adventure motorcycles of the 1990s, directly inspired by Cagiva’s Dakar-winning factory rally machines and powered by Ducati’s charismatic 904cc Desmodromic L-twin engine.
This particular example from 1990 is presented in honest and original condition, showing 116,773 kilometers from new. While that figure may initially seem substantial, it perfectly reflects what the Elefant was engineered to do: cover serious distances with character, reliability, and endurance. Unlike many low-mileage museum pieces, this motorcycle has clearly lived the life it was built for.

Importantly, the extensive maintenance history supports this. The previous owner maintained the bike meticulously over more than two decades of ownership, with documented servicing, timing belt replacements, valve adjustments, bearing work, suspension servicing. A major engine rebuild was undertaken at around 63,000 km at which point the engine received substantial mechanical work including big-end bearings, upgraded cylinders and pistons, camshaft work, and lower-end bearing replacement.

Cosmetically, the motorcycle remains very attractive. The bodywork has been professionally repainted to a high standard and still presents beautifully today, while naturally showing some signs of use and age consistent with a genuine rally-inspired travel motorcycle. Those small imperfections only reinforce the authenticity of the machine and suit the Elefant’s purposeful character remarkably well.

A motorcycle like this represents far more than just a collectible classic. It is a usable piece of Italian motorcycling history: a Ducati-powered desert icon developed during Cagiva’s golden Dakar era under Claudio Castiglioni.
