Ducati 900 Super Sport

YEAR 1993 PRICE € 6,950

An exceptionally preserved example of one of Ducati’s most underrated modern classics.

The Ducati 900 Super Sport has long lived in the shadow of the 851, 888 and 916. Yet judged purely as a motorcycle, the 900 SS is arguably one of the most compelling Ducatis of the 1990s: beautiful, relatively light, comfortable, easy to use and powered by the wonderfully characterful 904cc air-cooled Desmodromic V-twin. And, for now at least, it remains remarkably affordable.

This 1993 Ducati 900 SS is an exceptionally well-preserved example. Rather than having been restored or extensively modified over the years, it has simply been cared for properly. Paintwork, finishes and details remain in immaculate condition, and the motorcycle presents remarkably well for its age.

Even the original exhaust silencers are still fitted, something that has become increasingly unusual on these motorcycles. The only notable deviation from standard specification is the fitment of braided brake lines.

Ready to ride

Cosmetic condition is only half the story with an older Ducati. This 900 SS has been fully serviced and prepared, including new cam belts and new tyres. It is therefore ready to be ridden and enjoyed immediately. That distinction is important when comparing prices.

There are 900 Super Sports advertised for considerably less. At first glance, that can make a more expensive example seem difficult to justify. But buying a thirty-year-old Ducati purely on purchase price can quickly become false economy.

A cheaper motorcycle requiring tyres, cam belts, carburettor work, brakes, suspension attention, general servicing and the inevitable repairs resulting from years of deferred maintenance can easily absorb several thousand euros, while still retaining worn paintwork, damaged finishes, missing original parts or decades of modifications.

And those cosmetic details are considerably more difficult to put right than fitting a new set of timing belts. With this motorcycle, that work has already been done. Just throw your leg over it and go.

The Ducati sweet spot

The 900 SS occupies an interesting place in Ducati history. Its 904cc air-cooled, two-valve Desmo engine traces its architecture back to the Pantah, while the tubular steel trellis chassis, quality Showa suspension and powerful Brembo brakes place it firmly in Ducati’s modern era.

With roughly 75–80 horsepower and a relatively low weight, outright performance was never the entire point. The strength of the 900 SS is the complete package. There is plenty of torque for the road, excellent handling, strong brakes and a riding position considerably more accommodating than Ducati’s contemporary Superbikes. It is quick enough to be exciting, mechanical enough to feel special and comfortable enough to actually go somewhere on.

Perhaps that is why these motorcycles were overlooked by collectors for so long. The 851 and 888 had World Superbike pedigree. The 916 became a design icon. The 900 SS was simply the Ducati people bought to ride. More than thirty years later, we think that might be its greatest strength.

A remarkably original motorcycle, still fitted with details that disappeared from many examples decades ago, properly serviced, fitted with fresh tyres and new cam belts, and ready to enjoy from day one has a very different value proposition from a cheaper motorcycle requiring recommissioning. This 900 SS offers exactly that.

An exceptionally well-preserved, largely original example of one of the most usable and, we believe, still undervalued Ducatis of the 1990s. Ready to ride and available for viewing at Back to Classics.
